Saturday night in Nagoya. Sometimes there is nothing better! Last weekend Michi and I decided to meet up with Nick and Michelle for a night on the town at the London Pub Towser near JR Tsurmai station. I discovered the London Pub Towser last week on the net and to my knowledge (correct me if I am wrong!!!) it is the only bar in Nagoya that serves Yonayona Real Ale and Tokyo Black Real Ale from hand taps. They have 12 beers on tap, the most normal being Guiness and Stella Artois. They also have a Iwate IPA and Stout, Hakusekikan Vintage, and a few others. The place is really nice and the atmosphere is great.
The Iwate brews were amazing. I had the IPA and Nick had the stout, both were stellar. The London Pub Towser also serves proper London pints....big 20 oz brews!
The downside? A seating fee and 1000 yen per pint. When we saw the prices we decided we would head somewhere else for food--but what they had looked decent.

We ended up eating at an AMAZING Thai place near the station. Great green curry and Pad Thai.
If you are craving some ale from a tap, check out the Towser. However, bring your pocketbook. 2 beers, 2 margaritas (tiny ones!) and 2 martinis.....$95. Yes. Six drinks for $95 bucks. Now, if you want the ambiance and the atmosphere...spend away. But $95 bucks can buy a ton of Tokyo Black and Yona Yona Pale Ale that I can drink from the can!!!!!!****
**** I've since recanted on this and realized that the prices are not that bad AT ALL considering what you are getting and how much these pints cost in Tokyo. Towser is a great bar and should be a favorite of anyone who likes good beer in the Nagoya area.

We made it down to the Tokai area for a couple days beer hunting. This place was the highlight. Compared to Tokyo, we didn't find this expensive at all and maybe we made a mistake as we drank too much, but I didn't see a table charge. How much was it? This place was stellar with Iwatekura Oyster Stout and other great Japanese beers on tap. Tried the food, which I thought was pretty good, but only had the fish and chips, need to try other stuff to get a better sense of things. If I am ever back in Nagoya, I will definitely hang out here. Quick review of other places we went. Mein Schloss served a beer called Twinkle, which provided lots of entertainment for us. I thought the beers were non-descript as was the restaurant and food. Tenjingura - The beers sucked and the sake was mediocre at best. Inuyama Lorely - mediocre food and beer and we were the only ones in the restaurant! Moku Moku restaurant at Nagoya station - great great food and very nice beers (only two on draft and one in bottle.) Highly recommended for lunch and bring your appetite. On the way back we stopped at Hakone brewery - Pils and Pale Ale were not bad, but the 7.5% winter seasonal stout was the highlight of all the brewpubs/breweries we visited. When you are in Tokyo Chewy and I will show you around. Thanks for the info on the places you provided, very helpful.
Wow...real ale in Japan. Very cool.
Correction, I just saw the receipt and there is a500 yen table charge. OK that is BS cause I can't think of anywhere in tokyo that has one. Still , if you are going to drop 5000 yen on beer and food, you will get more bang for your buck here than in Tokyo.
I grabbed a Hakone brewery sampler set when I went onsening up there last February, but I didn't find the winter stout. There was a different top-notch stout in the set; I wonder if it's the same thing re-packaged. I guess I have to plan a "Valentine's Day" onsen (beer) trip with the lady to grab one. Haha.
Thanks for that update on our Tokai trip there, 'Twinkle'. Yep. we all three wise men of us had a blast. Not all of it was laughing at a certain person's new nickname. Mein Schloss was exactly that. Towser was a great end to a day that was full of long distnace local trains, Ozenoyukidoke IPAs (available at most seijuishi stores and highly, highly recommended), fake castles, twinkly beer wannabes, mediocre sake and horrible misstyled beers, bamboo backrounded ribs with 2 ok beers and at teh end of the evening I had 4 pints at Towzer. Bweers I knew and A london porter I hadnt had on tpa before. Nice bar. Tokyo prices? - maybe, but this was 1,000yen for a UK pint, not the US pint and 1600 you can pay in some places in Tokyo. Check out Towzer, boys. The fish and chiops were ok but WTF was the sauce served with it?? when you come to the Big Smoke, get in touch. Twinkle, Kebab and I will get you drunk without the sue of happoshus or faek beers. Keep on blogging, dudes!
Towser is the best place to drink good beer in Nagoya, and the prices aren't bad at all. I think I just had sticker shock when I was there for the first time!
