It's no secret that the Japanese have become huge fans of bitter, dark chocolate. The stuff is everywhere, and it seems like they want it the darker the better. The fascination has made its way into the beer world, as you may have noticed. This year it seems that everyone has been making a "chocolate" style beer just in time for Valentine's Day. Most of the liquor sections in major department stores have a section with "Chocolate Beer" made for Valentine's Day.
In Japan, girls traditionally buy chocolate FOR BOYS, not the other way around like we do it in America. This helps clear up some confusion, because for most of us, a six pack of chocolate beer isn't going to turn the crank of the 'ole lady at home. Bringing home beer as a Valentine's gift in the US will most likely land you a reserved seat on the couch or the doghouse, unless of course you are lucky enough to have a woman that loves to drink dark beer.
My girlfriend loves to drink and loves to drink beer, but alas--she's not a fan of the dark stuff. But, as a good friend of mine named Meatloaf said, that ratio ain't bad.
I did quite a bit of beer searching this weekend, and now am the proud owner of three new "chocolate" Valentine's beers and a few other gems I found in the process. Check back with us often this week as we will be posting MANY "new" beer reviews, and should have some more beer updates by the end of the week.
It's 8:30AM on Monday friends.....GANBATTE!!!!!!
