Sapporo's The Golden Pilsner

A grand name for a beer with a grand gold and blue can to match. I just bought this at Jusco for 217 yen and I don't regret it. One drink and it is already better than Yebisu. This beers pours a (surprise!) golden color and looks much like other light japanese lagers in the glass. The taste is surprisingly balanced. This has the the crisp taste of a dry lager, a little hop subtleness, and room in the middle for some maltly goodness. The taste doesn't linger long, but it does a few reps on the palette before letting you know it is time for another drink. Right now, there are a few beers in Japanese stores that are masquerading around with 'pilsner' on the label. The first one that comes to mind is the Kirin Anniversary Pilsner. Well, this is a better beer for the same price or cheaper. This beer easily tops other Big Four brews in the 215ish price range including Kirin Lager and Super Dry. Don't pick it over a Premium Malts though, that would be a mistake.

May try that one tonight. Thanks for the info. Ginga Kogen glass, I see. I remember when they had their beer restaurants, out near the Ginza. They had a reasonable stout and German style pils, too. Kinda helles-like in its maltiness. Not any more, though. After thier almost going bankrupt (maybe they did) debacle and relocation, etc, they now only make the good weissen and wheat beers as well as a horrible pale ale. A friend of mine is a big Malts fan, too. I think it's ok. Used to like Yebisu. Not any more. I preferred the old malts to the new one, but then I'm weird. If u r out drinking with Twinkle and company in Tokyo soon, maybe we can drink together. Uh... ...I meant in seperate glasses. There are a lot of great bars in Tokyo. Unfortunately, most at Tokyo prices. There are some bargains though. Ask Tim about the Nagano Sake place. Gotta start there.

Chuwy, I'd like to try it as well, but i'm sure it won't be anywhere near Toei until sometime next year! I agree with the terrible Pale Ale from Ginga Kogen!!!!!

I 'borrowed' that glass from a Yamachan's in Nagoya. I don't feel too bad though, I also purchased one of their Yamachan logo liter mugs for far more than it was worth at the same time. Yes, Ginga's pale ale sucks but the silver star bottle is some delicious stuff.
