Vanessa, who teaches elementary school in Tahara and lives below me, has been travelling alot lately. In the past month she has been to
India and
Okinawa. Vanessa is a very thoughtful person. Thoughtful enough to bring me back beer.

From
India, She brought
King Fisher Premium Lager Beer. It has a great warning on the can that says "
consumption of liquor is injurious to health." Damn right it is. This beer does not taste like Japanese Dry Lager. Miyuki said it tastes like 'Asia'. I, being one who has never tasted 'Asia', had nothing to say against this. This beer tastes like 'Asia'. Miyuki's grandmother, who is 80 and awesome, said the beer was 'toritomenanoni'. According to an electronic translator, this means 'rambling' and 'disjointed'. This leaves me wondering if the taste of Asia is rambling and disjointed or if this beer makes the taste of Asia rambling and disjointed. Something to think about. The ingredients on the side of the can read "
water, malt, sugar, rice/maize/millet/corn syrup, hops, yeast". They don't pull their punches. They throw it in your face and you can taste it. the sugar and the everything syrup give the beer a cooked stew kinda taste. Makes me appreciate Japanese lager. Damn.

From
Okinawa, Vanessa brought me a real
Orion. You can tell it is a real
Orion because nowhere on the can does it say
Asahi, like the mainland
Orion does. DH explained this in an earlier post that you can read
here. If you don't think you will ever make it to Okinawa to drink a real
Orion, don't worry. They are just doing the Japanese light lager thing.
Orion is identical to
Kirin Lager. Which is strange, considering their mainland distributing is through
Asahi. Maybe they are trying to stick it to the bigger man. One thing I like about Orion is their can. It reminds me of the Olympics. Which are then connected in my mind to the Aichi Beer Olympics, which DH is the reigning Beer Pong Champion of. Great times.

Sometimes, I see
Tsing Tao beer from
China in some of the stores around
Aichi. It is ok. Twice I have seen
Tsing Tao Dark Beer. Once in an international store in Toyohashi and once in the
Atsumi Foods near Miyuki's house. Both times there has been only 1 bottle. Both times I have bought it. And both times it was never restocked.
Tsing Tao Dark Beer is delicious. It may be better than
Premium Malts Black and
Beer Chocolat. Due to the limited availibility, I've never been able to properly test. If you see this beer, buy it. You may never see it again.

How should I discribe about Taste is Asia.
I don't mean this beer taste is me.
Hey Country Boys, I'm a city boy (from NYC) living in Toyohashi, Aichi. I've seen Tsing Tao Dark Beer at my local Yamaya. I'm going to buy some next time to see if they restock it. Thanks for the tip!

Frank, which Yamaya is close to your house? The one that I always visit doesnt have the dark, let me know so I can buy some ASAP!
Also Frank, Nate and I are in and around Toyohashi every weekend! Where are your favorite places to grab a drink?
And I will add that I held the Beer Pong Title With Texas Dan (Team Dan and the Power of David Bowie), but was defeated at the second Beerlympics in an early round. I am however, a reigning overall Beerlympics Champion. Which, that title and about 270yen will buy you a big can of Super Dry.
Not sure of the exact address of the Yamaya... I know it's about a 15 minute bike ride from Yagyubashi station. I'll get back you about it.
My friends and I frequent an Italian restaurant/bar called Cavolo on Friday nights. They have a pretty good selection of beer, including Italian beer.

Got it - the Yamaya is in Hashira Hachiban Chou. They've even got a couple of my favorites there; Lowenbrau and Negra Modelo. Happy beer hunting! Where do you guys usually go drinking in Toyohashi?
