Our hotel arrived at Gotemba Kogen 3 a.m. Friday morning. Miyuki parked it in a space near a bathroom and we all fell asleep. DH and I were awake at 730 to find light rain and heavy fog. You could see about 15 feet in any direction. We walked around the Kogen compound and tried to ignore the hunger knawing at our stomachs, waiting for the bread store to open at 10 a.m. I know, a bread store that opens at 10, what's up with that? Miyuki was asleep in the car this whole time.
Gotemba Kogen is a resort with a hotel, cabins, soccer fields, 3 restaurants, an onsen, ji beer, and a great view of Fuji when the weather permits. If you arrive at 3 a.m., be warned, nothing opens until 10. Of course, if you are riding the free bus from Mishima Station the first one doesn't arrive until 10.We had plans to meet up with brewer Scott Brimmer at 5 that evening, so our day plans were wide open. The gift shop at the Grand Table restaurant sells 2 liter growlers of beer for 3200 yen. Refills on it are only 1700, so we just had to get one of these bad boys filled with the Weizenbock. We took this, some bread, meat, cheese, and oranges (purchased for about 1,000 yen) and went to go sit on the giant bell.
The Weizenbock is 7% and delicious! This is the way to get wasted. Lay under a bell, eat, drink 4 liters (after a refill) of weizenbock, and stare toward where Fuji would be. We did see it for about 5 minutes, then it disapeared again. Everyone should go to Gotemba Kogen to drink the weizenbock and lay under the bell.
Coca Cola had said kind of traveling entertainment show that day at Gotemba Kogen. We hung out with Qoo-san and the Coca Cola B-girls. After that we got a tour of the brewery from Scott and all you can eat/drink but DH will tell you about that.
Gotemba Kogen also has a pretty good schwarz, pils (Scott says it is his favorite), weizen, and a kolsch (Gotemba Kogen's Bridal Ale). Yes, I would drink the schwarz and pils again, but I would drown myself in the weizenbock.
