Maybe it was the weather yesterday. Maybe it was the good mood that I was in. Maybe it was because my mom sent me a package full of goodies and a $50 itunes gift card. Maybe it just really is pretty good. Whatever the reason, I thought the new Kirin Ichiban Shibori was pretty tasty. I don't think it's ready to replace the Malt's as the best of the macros, but it is second for sure. (Not counting Kirin's Murokas) Pretty good malty tatse, really nice balance.
Kirin has been doing some things right. The Murokas were all pretty tasty, the new Ichiban is right on, and the you can't beat the stout for 200 yen a can. Chuwy agreed that the new, revamped, all malt brew was pretty tasty. What do you think?
For the money, pick it over everything else in the combini--but if you got a little extra coin, the Premium Malt's still has the top spot.

It wasn't as good as my drunken memory 'remembered' but still I'd say one of thebetter oefferings out there from the big 4 (and about 215yen a can, good value). I may hit a new bar that has premium malts on tap and see how it is, after you guys talking it up so much. I'll also have a Shakespeare Stout, too.
Chuwy, for sure the Premium Malt's can't compare to the microbrews and stouts that you all can get in Tokyo....but for what it is, it is good. The new ichiban Shibrori was right up there...
No worries, dude. I actually have a few freinds in this big city that is Tokyo (yes, I do have at least a FEW freinds) who prefer it to the craft beers I try to get them to drink. That says a lot. It is indeed a nice beer. 500yen a pint at Shibuya Faulte during happy hour, too! Have a cracking weekend. Gotenba weissen and pils and schwarz are good and Scott is helping bring out some itneresting seasonals.
Boys, I am not impressed with this stuff. But wait, I have a can of the old "less-than-100%-malt" here too, so I'll try it in a minute to compare. It is drinkable and not unpleasant, but I must say, I find even Yebisu a bit better. Considering the price difference, though, I suppose I would go for this! Don't want to piss off Nate.
Does anyone at the big four know that hops will make a beer bitter if you leave them in the boil for a while? Wait, I forgot Edelpils. That is hopped. Have you guys tried that? It is the best from the majors by far, especially on tap.

Dudes, I am drinking the new and the old next to each other, and I'll tell you, they are close to even in my mind. The new one is certainly richer and maltier, but the old one seems better hopped! I would put the new one a step ahead only. They are similar, and the old one is the right temperature while the new is a bit too warm, but it seems to me the hops are better in the old one. Anyone care to try the comparison?
the comparison can wwit till iget to convenie with soem cheap freinds (like me!). Good idea, though.
I dont think there's a hwole load of difference. The old is perhaps 'spunkier'. The new lakcing in potential and perhaps more moring but more traditional - hence boring. Yes, putting in the hops will make it more bitter but more so in the first stage bittering process. later onin the 2nd stage it is mor aroma effct, but thats only if you go by the book, as it were. I think the big 4 are making up a new book/s to fit their agenda, as they go along. Still who are we, the mass Japanese public, to argue? WE've swallowed everything so far, from the forced suicides in Okinawa to the Manchurian incident to the fact that Godzillla is as tall as Tokyo tower (which came first?) and Ampanman having a new cloned face every episode is perfectly normal and ok. at least three of us is drunk, right now.
