In Tokyo there is an area that is famous for Sumo wrestlers and
Popeye's. It is called
Ryogoku. This is where Miyuki and I went to find
Virgo Beer (and to go to Popeye's). From the limited information that I have understood (much of it I didn't understand), Virgo Beer is an extremely small microbrewery whose beer is only sold in a couple kilometer radius around the brewery. On the internet, Miyuki found a liquor store that sells limited edition Virgo Beer with special Sumo labels made only for them. This store is in Ryogoku. Here is a picture of me with the owners. You can see the family resemblence.

The dark beer, with the black clad imposing figures on the label, tasted like burnt peanuts. There was a darkish german kinda taste but...mainly burnt peanuts. The lighter ale, with the fat guys in diapers touching each other, also tasted like burnt peanuts. So...both of the Virgo Beers taste like burnt peanuts. Also, as these beers got warmer, they still tasted like burnt peanuts. When there was an inch left in both bottles, I mixed them together and got burnt peanuts. That is really all I can say about this beer. By now you know what "that" refers to so I don't have to say it again. Unless you just want to go out of your way to find as many craft beers as you can in Japan (like me), you can skip Virgo and not miss much more than a burnt peanut or two.
Has anyone out there ever drank Virgo Beer? Do you like burnt peanuts?

Virgo beer (queue deliverance music).
Nassty stuff.
They have a red wine beer and a white wine beer which is made with...you guessed it. Wine.
Niiiiice.
Pangaea had 3 of them on tap a month or two back. I didn't go. There's a reason they are so close to the most famous bar in Japan but still no one has heard of them. I assume they taste as bad as Niigata beer and Doppo. I knew to stay away but it's always fun to visit these places, then finish the day at a quality place.
NOTHING TASTES AS BAD AS NIIGATA! NOTHING.
I have had the White before and agree about the burnt peanuts. Lame stuff, though not overly offensive I thought.
I am volunteering on Sunday and visiting as a customer on Friday, so I guess I will see you there.
Tim
T, the doppo white chocolate was especially lovely, if I recall you and Kebab reminding me.
I would still take White Shit Chocolate over Niigata beer.
