Official Beer of Street Drankin': Heartland

Now that the weather has warmed and the cherry blossoms have passed, you know what it is time for? Yes... Street Drankin'! And the official street drankin' beer is Kirin's Heartland. Off draft this beer tastes horrible but out of its tradmark 500 ml bottle while you are chillin on the sidewalk, it's a standard.

Let's talk about the bottle. A dark green glass emblazed with the nurturing beer tree, and using only a minimal label on the neck. And what a neck! Long and slender, rising from the squatter base. Perfect for gripping while you are pouring some brew down the gullet.

OK, imagine you are street drankin' at your favorite street drankin' bar, Spirits, in Nagoya. Refill time and your friends are reaching for that 425 yen Kinshachi or that 350 yen Sam Adams. There is no problem with this, for example, that is our friend Nick above relaxing with a cuban and a Kinshachi Imp Choc Stout on his birthday. But now, you've already had some top quality and now you need the filler, the pale base malt to the specialty grains. You reach for that 315 yen 500 ml bottle of Kirin Heartland! If you are street drankin' in country Tahara, that same bottle is only going to run 285 yen. A smart choice that tastes better than those other big company light lagers. Kirin Heartland comes in a beautiful bottle with a taste that is not offensive.

With all that said, never buy this beer to take back to your house. You can stick the empty bottles in your backpack to use for homebrew later, but please drink the beer where it was meant to be drank -on the street.

Shall we decree the Heartland to be the official beer of Summer 2010???? Last summer's official beer was High Life, preceded by Lone Star and PBR. Do I get a second?

Also, we had it on tap at Heaven's Door in Sakae. Dreadful. But I think it was the method of storage and not the beer itself. I'm not the biggest fan of the Heartland, but I will start drinking it if it if crowned The Official Beer of Summer 2010. Vote on the main page.

Sorry, 2009--I'm getting ahead of myself. And Corona was the Offical beer of Summer 2006 by the way.

IT's not a bad beer. 222yen at my OK makes it a better beer. Yes, strangely it does taste brtter when drank on the street. It's a beer to drink then leave alone then come back to a bit later, to get the best out of it. Otherwise, you get bored of it fast. Boys, you don't have malts on your summer beer list. I go for none of the above.

I just...I can't do it. I've had it twice and so has my sink drain. I'll take a Premium Malts or canned Chu-Hi for my street drankin' Although, I've yet to try Heartland in the streets, maybe that is where it belongs afterall...

Boys boys!!! The premium malt's reigns supreme!! However, we must have a beer for the people for the streets...Shall I add the premium malts to the poll???

It's done! Let the race for The Official beer of Summer 2009 begin again!!!!

Got a kick out of one of the comments in the blog post -- Heartland provides the official bottles for my homebrewed hooch. That's a blog post I've been meaning to do up for a while...

Heartland down your sink drain? You are breakin the rules! Of course it tasting bad if you are drinking it indoors.

And yes, I have about 9 or 10 Heartland bottles that I use for homebrew and I love them dearly.

Got out of the office a bit early today, noticed how awesome the day was and thought "street drankin'?" Picked up a bottle of Heartland because I hate to judge what I do not know. Much to my surprise, it tasted exactly the same. But the warm air, gentle breeze, and clear skies (and the fact that I'm going to be stone sober the next three weeks) meant that I happily swigged it on my walk home from the train station. Verdicts still out on the beer of summer, but in a pinch I can drink this in the streets.

MMM, grapefruit chuhi, apple chuhi, strawberry and cream chuhi (only tasted the one my female friend bought, I swear) are still my go to for the streets...

The bottle being green and green being my longtime favorite color probably influences the taste as it goes into my mouth. If I drank this beer from a clear or brownish vessel, I'm sure my opinion of it would drop.

I'm sticking by my verdict. I say the he artland isnt abad beer and the best value you can get. However, I dont thin you can dirnk it every day without quickly getting bored. An occasional bottle on the street sounds good, as long as it's chilled really cold. CAPA, I too was shocked to hear you promoting the chu-hi. Tsk tsk!
