Saturday is the Kentucky Derby and that means Derby Party! Derby Party is a great time where you drink and eat all day to prepare for the most exciting minute and a half in sports! It is time for the women to wear big floppy derby hats and for everyone to eat Derby Pie! This is also the one day a year when it is ok to drink Mint Juleps.
Actually the only people drinking the mint juleps are the out-of-state visitors that "have to drink a mint julep in Kentucky on Derby Day!" This is good income for the bars because they can charge out the ass for some bourbon mixed with mint syrup. A Mint Julep, as the world knows it, is strictly for the tourists. A real Kentuckian follows the recipe written by the late Kentuckian and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Henry Watterson:"Pluck the mint gently from its bed, just as the dew of the evening is about to form upon it ... Prepare the simple syrup and measure out a half-tumbler of whiskey. Pour the whiskey into a well-frosted silver cup, throw the other ingredients away and drink the whiskey.”
In other words, a real Mint Julep, as described by Watterson, minus the silver cup (don't have many of those lying around), looks like this:
