Max's Bar and the W IPA

Saturday night we headed to Max's Bar in Nagoya because they had Minoh's W IPA on hand pump. Besides this, there was not the biggest selection. Their complete roster is Minoh's W IPA and English Ale, Kirin Braumeister, and a bottled lager called Hemp High that Minoh apparently makes, though their name is no where on the label.

DH and Michi had a headstart on Miyuki and I finding the bar but they suck. We found it first, then I had to give DH directions over the phone, then I had to go outside and wave my arms, then he finally made it inside. Our friends Junk, Nick, Michelle, Billimack, and Derek showed up for the W IPA as well.

I opened the menu and saw the W IPA was 800 yen. Yay! I ordered the W IPA and received a half pint. Dammit. This place isn't cheap. Also, they were selling the 5% English Ale for the same price as the 9% W IPA. And they have a 400 yen seating fee. Hmmm.
The W IPA is a great, well-made beer. I think Max's Bar serves it a bit warm. I know that hand pump should be at room temperature, but what if the room is too a bit above room temperature? This beer was definitely rockin' harder when Brewer Kaori-san served it to me at Grande Biere.

I also paid a retarded 900 yen for a bottle of Hemp High. I already knew (cause Miyuki checked it on her cell phone) that you could get it for 400 yen on the internet, but I wanted it right then. This beer is susposedly brew with real Mary Jane. It is an ok lager with a bitter bush-tasting finish. If it is the ganja pushing the bush flavors, this beer is better without it. Just give it the name and drop the herb. Novelty beer buyers (like me) are still only gonna buy it once. We'll just get a tastier beer for our money.Overall, Max's Bar is expensive and really doesn't have a selection beside the W IPA. I have just heard about a liquor store near Nagoya station that sells it for 578 yen a bottle. If this is true, I can get my W IPA fix there.

If you are in Nagoya and want to go there, this is what you do. From Sakae, you walk down that street with the Apple and Adidas stores. When you see Parco, keep walking in the same direction but on the sidewalk closest to Parco. you will walk under a bridge and an overpass. Turn left on the sidewalk after that. There it is.

Or, you can use the directions Nate gave me.

"Once you see the bridge, it's right there."

The WIPA was good, but like Nate said, way too hot and pricey.

Towser had it for 1000 yen for an Imp. Pint, but their seating charge is 150 yen more. (I think) However, on this night, Towser didn't have it.

Towser still has a bigger selection, so has got to be the better bar, assuming the atmosphere in this little place wasn't kick ass.
Still, it's always good to check out a new bar. Nice find.
You could mail Minoh and ask if they have details on places they sell their beer to. Hunt down that DIPA.

That's how we found this place. Kaori-san told Miyuki where her beers go in Nagoya. I'm sure Towser is better than this place.
