In the biggest news to hit Japan since Nate's surprise going away party last night in Toyohashi, Kirin and Suntory are planning to merge by the end of the year. Not sure if they have announced that they will make a hybrid Ichiban Shibori and Malt's beer yet, but they did assure the public that they will continue to brew cheap happoshu to keep the homeless drunks in front of Toyohashi station happy.
Whew. That was close.
Many of you know that Kirin already owns beer brands from around the world, like San Miguel. Many don't know that San Miguel is the worst tasting beer in the world. We voted last night.

Yep. It seems it MAY happen. Kinda sucks for me. Preferred suntory to theother big 3.They used to bring out semi interesting beers, back in the day. Oh well. Will there be a 'Super premuin ichi ban shibori the malts premium'? Hope not.

Nothing will change with regards to beer. I am surprised you guys got this up so fast. It simply gives them more money to buy brands like San Miguel, Lion Nathan, etc. They will likely go on a global spending spree over the next few years (this has already started for Kirin this year).

They've done australia and New Zealand and the Phillipines. Perhaps next they'll invest in Canada or the States?

Baird Brewing is waiting for a multi-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars buyout offer. As an owner/partner in the company, I would like you all to suggest that to Kirin. Hell, I'll even agree to work for them for a year or so to help ease the transition!
I guess next we'll see Asahi and Sapporo merge, and maybe bring Orion with them -- otherwise Asahi will lose to Kirin, and they wouldn't like that.
Really, though, it's too bad that so many craft brewers are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy while Kirin is just swimming in piles of money -- just not fair!
Just somehow get invited to the Kirin summer poolside party and go there with those big baggy swimming shorts with biiiiiiig pockets.

Still as bad as you guys make fun of Kuntory's beers, I would drink Ichiban Shibori or Malts anyday over Bud, MolsonCoors or Miller any day. Malts has way more hops in it than your standard pale lager.

It's a cracker of a bar and if you like American IPAs, then you'll like this place. It's one of the better bars in Japan. Doesn't have 70bers on tap but the av quality is better than popeyes, in my opinion. Cheaper, too. It wsno smoking before popeyes. 3 mins from Yokohama station. Whaddaya say? Could even do both places.

But Numazu is only a hoop and a holler away from Tokyo -- 90 minutes and you're there! And July 25th is the big Numazu fireworks festival -- great time to visit, get drunk, and then hallucinate watching the bombs going off in the sky.

However, I get in Fri night, leave Sunday (this is often the way I roll in Japan, it's a long story...). So, a trip outside Tokyo is unfortunately not in the works this time. I will have to hit the Numazu Taproom and Thrash during another visit.
Yokohama is very easy to hit from Tokyo. Catch a Toyoko MinatoMirai Line Limited Express train (25 minutes | 4 times per hour) ('Express' trains take 29 minutes) from Shibuya to Yokohama for only ¥260.
I walked from Yokohama station to the Thrash Zone relatively easily. (OK - I had a lot of time. And it was slightly delayed in opening that night.) Ask Chuwy how to walk there.
