2009 Kirin Taisho Pilsner

Ok, so I had this on Friday night in Toyohashi (as well as The Black Malt's--they're BACK!) and I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, this beer probably won't win any awards with the hop heads, but as far as 'cheaper' beer goes from a conbini--I was impressed. Anyone else out there care to share their opinions?

No need to be ashamed. This is a very nice beer. We had two cans each of the Meiji and Taisho, with the latter being the clear winner. We have been drinking mainly German beers lately, but for a "light" brew the Taisho holds up well and has good balance.

Interesting. Last time, two years ago, when I had these beers. Meiji was the clear winner, though both was a step above average. Must pick up some.

Landing in Tokyo on Friday. I'll make sure to pick this up ASAP! Black Malts sounds delicious too.

Chad...good choice! Also, if you are going to be in Tokyo, make sure you hit up some of the good beer joints there as well! Baird Beer has two taprooms, the Aldgate has good beers...check out Chuwy's boozelist: http://boozelist.blogspot.com/ for a listing of a ton of good bars, and what's currently on tap!

I can't agree with anyone on here about the Taisho vs. Meiji. These are the same beers as two years ago and the CLEAR winner is the Meiji. I am doing a side-by-side tasting right now. Much more fuller body, richer, nice toasty malt character AND most importantly perhaps, it is an all malt beer. The Taisho has rice in it.

I poured these two side by side, but the Meiji 20 seconds before the Taisho. The head of the Meiji last two minutes longer than the Taisho (same type of glass, about the same head amount).

The Taisho is a moderate step above the average Kirin, but the body is fairly whimpy, little depth and little hop character.

That is my take on things.

Oh yeah, the hop character is really coming out in the Meiji. 8/10 for a lager vs. 5/10 for Taisho, IMO.

TimE....it's been a long long time since I've had the Meiji....but I'll fix that Friday night!
